Inspired by the well-worn painting smocks of a beloved auntie. Laila was an extraordinarily talented artist and portrait painter who received her first training in art at the knee of the great Spanish artist, Alfredo Sisquella, friend and contemporary of Pablo Picasso who believed "true individuality is independent of fashion, and great works move through the enduring quality of their human feeling. And that rises above all trends."
A Matisse quote — and one of her favorites — sums up Laila’s spirit well: "The role of art is not to be isolated, in an artificial or neutral space, but to participate in our life. Its goal is to be useful, not only beautiful. Its use is therapeutic as well as artistic. It seeks to 'relieve', 'alleviate', 'to heal'. The instrument of healing is LIGHT. . ."
